‘Bringing people together’: Deptford hosts third market fair

Free event features local vendors, township officials

For the third time this year, the Deptford Township Community Center on Delsea Drive will host the market fair on Aug. 20.

The free event will feature local vendors who want to bring attention to their products, including fresh fruit, homemade artwork and flowers.

“There will be 25 vendors there,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “It’s a community event meant to bring people together. All of our community events help to introduce people to businesses and town council members. Anyone can call the rec department to set up a vendor.”

Township officials will also be in attendance, including Medany and other council members. The ultimate goal of the event is to one day turn the fair into a farmer’s market, though the idea presents issues.

“The fair is only once a month, which is tough, as farmers want something more steady than that,” Medany explained.

While the Aug. 20 fair will be the third this year, last year saw just one. The next fair will be on Sep. 17 and both the mayor and town council are looking at each event with an eye toward future fairs.

“After the September event,” said Medany, “we’ll evaluate each event to determine what we can improve about it.”

Fair hours are 8 a.m. to noon. Vendors interested in participating can either call the parks and recreation department at (856) 845-0804 or send an email to   deptfordparksandrec@deptford-nj.org
