Board of ed remind residents of upcoming events

Parents voice concerns about safety in district schools.

The Evesham Township Board of Education had a busy meeting on April 28: It cited the recent Multicultural Night, reminded parents of upcoming district events and addressed recent online rumors regarding school safety.

Superintendent Dr. Justin Smith thanked organizers and participants of the Multicultural Night at DeMasi Middle School, adding that showing respect and support elevates the community and school district.

“I (want to) thank all the families and staff who were involved in organizing and showcasing the songs, dances, displays, cuisines and more,” Smith said. “That is who we are as a district community at our best.”

The board also cited an All-In Disabilities Awareness Night set for Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Marlton Field House, and a Ukrainian relief drive that will accept  donations until May 21.

Smith cited township police and the district’s Special Services Department for organizing the awareness event.

“Our goal is to promote awareness and foster an inclusive environment for all individuals to meet their potential as valued members of our community,” he said.

During public participation, several parents questioned the board about student safety in the schools. Smith denounced what he said was misinformation spread on social-media pages and between groups, noting that the schools follow proper safety protocols and that he remains in contact with township police.

“As there is some misinformation on social media — (that is) wrong on so many levels — I’d like to share a few important reminders,” Smith added. “Our schools are safe and we follow our protocols in coordination with Evesham police as appropriate. Chief (Walt) Miller and I maintain a close communication.”

The board will hold a special public hearing on the 2022-’23 school budget on Thursday, May 5, at DeMasi Middle School. The next regular meeting will be held on May 26.
