While Cherry Hill’s unique, neighborhood driven geography means one big holiday celebration through the center of town isn’t in the cards, the township has more than a few little ways to commemorate the anniversary of American liberation, COVID notwithstanding..
This year, Mayor Susan Shin Angulo and the Cherry Hill Township Council want residents and members of neighboring towns to join them for the inaugural Independence Day 5K and Block Party at Croft Farm.
“I’m so excited for our first Cherry Hill Independence Day 5K and block party,” the mayor enthused. “After the turmoil and isolation of the past year, this event represents so much more than just a 5K.
“It’s an opportunity for us all to reunite in person, enjoy our fantastic public spaces and celebrate our nation’s birthday, together, as a resilient and united community.”
Per Township Director of Communications Michelle Caffrey, the new event fulfills one of Angulo’s top priorities, to develop and improve outdoor amenities and utilize them whenever possible to bring the community together.
With COVID restrictions rapidly being lifted, township officials believe it’s important to embrace green spaces and outdoor programs. The run/walk component and carnival atmosphere are designed to complement local celebrations — which have long shown off the unique charm of Cherry Hill’s neighborhoods — by adding in a township-wide event that magnifies the diversity and character of the township.
Those looking for a more active way to experience fresh air and sunshine can participate in either the chip-timed race or a 1-mile walk through Croft Farm and Maria Barnaby Greenwald Park. The race is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female age group finishers in the 5K. Runners are encouraged to dress in their favorite red, white and blue; the best “fourth-themed” runner is also eligible to win a prize. The first 250 runners/walkers will receive a T-shirt.
Caffrey revealed the block party aspect of the day is more of an informal community gathering that allows the runners/walkers to attend with their families, even if they aren’t participating.
Those who revel in a street-fair atmosphere can enjoy inflatable games, airbrush tattoos, a stilt walker, balloon artist and bubble show on the front lawn. A DJ will play music and Kona Ice will also sell its iconic shaved ice. The mayor and council are expected to be in attendance.
Runners/walkers should sign up by June 18 to guarantee T-shirt size. Participants will also receive a credit for free refreshments. Anyone not signed up will have the opportunity to purchase food.
Since the state has lifted restrictions on masks, social distancing and capacity levels for outdoor activities, township governance encourages residents to follow the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines at the event. Hand- sanitizing stations will also be set up around the property.
