Orchard Valley Middle School student wins medal in pie eating contest

Middle school celebrates Pi Day.

Orchard Valley Middle School sixth-grader Kathryn Stuart bested seven of her classmates in a lunch-period pie-eating contest in celebration of Pi Day. Celebrated annually on March 14, the date – 3.14 – represents the first digits of Pi, the mathematical symbol designating the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Organized by math teacher Melissa Bamaca, eight students from each grade-level competed, with hands behind their backs, to determine the winning contestant who recorded the fastest time in devouring a chocolate-covered marshmallow pie. Stuart’s efforts earned her a medal as the 6th-grade champion.
