Washington Township High School head boys basketball coach Matt Kiser, his staff and the school’s freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads will pay tribute to former WTHS teacher and coach Mike Schuenemann when the teams’ Booster Club sponsors the school’s Second Annual Dunk Cancer event on Thursday, Feb. 20. The Minutemen will take on Cherry Hill East, with the freshman game beginning at 3:45 p.m., the junior varsity game starting a 5:30 p.m. and the varsity contest tipping at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to dress in purple and help the squad dunk cancer!
The game will be dedicated to the memory of Mike Schuenemann, a former WTHS tennis coach and special education teacher who lost his battle to cancer in the fall of 2018. Schuenemann’s wife, Lauren, will donate all monies raised from this game to Celenies Rodriguez, a Chestnut Ridge Middle School student who is currently in a cancer battle of her own.
More than 200 t-shirts have been sold for the event. A limited number of t-shirts will be available for purchase at the door for $12.
“WTHS boys basketball is pleased to honor the memory of a great coach, teacher, husband and father while helping out a community member in need of support,” Kiser said. “It is a concept that Mike would have embraced and wholeheartedly endorsed. We hope the bleachers are packed in purple as we bring awareness to the attempts to dunk cancer!”
