Thousands remain without power in Mt. Laurel Township on Tuesday morning as the area continues to recover from last night’s severe thunderstorm.
The storm arrived shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday evening. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning as a storm capable of producing wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour approached the area. The storm knocked out power to many and sent trees and power lines falling to the ground.
As of 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning, more than 6,000 customers in Mt. Laurel remained without power according to PSE&G. This constitutes a little more than one quarter of the township.
In addition, numerous main roads remained closed due to downed power lines or trees. As of 9:15 a.m., Mt. Laurel Police say South Church Street is closed between Ramblewood Parkway and Academy Drive southbound due to down wires. Local traffic can gain access from Ramblewood Parkway to Cambridge. Hainesport Road is closed between Academy Drive and Church Road in Evesham. Finally, Mt. Laurel Road is closed in both directions between Tara Drive and Elbo Lane.
