April 27 marks Mt. Laurel Township’s annual Community Cleanup Day and Shred Day events

Residents can help cleanup areas of town or dispose of sensitive documents in a secure way that's also environmentally friendly.

The name of the game is being lean, going green and keeping clean for Mt. Laurel Township when it hosts its annual Community Cleanup Day and Shred Day Event on April 27.

The two events will once again give residents a chance to keep their local community clean while also disposing of their unwanted, sensitive documents through a secure process that’s also environmentally friendly.

As in past years, the two events will run concurrent on April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon, with the cleanup beginning at Laurel Acres Park and the shred event taking place at the Mt. Laurel Township Police Garage at the township’s municipal complex.

For the cleanup, all residents interested in helping clean litter through various areas of town are invited to meet at the Pavilion at Laurel Acres Park, 1045 S. Church St., to receive gloves and bags.

Volunteers with the Mt. Laurel Green Team will be on hand to also participate in the cleanup and help coordinate the day’s activities as residents “beautify” the community.

Volunteers can sign up to clean areas including, but not limited to, Laurel Acres Park, Spencer Park, Memorial Park, Trotters Complex, the Elbo Lane Walking Paths, Willow Turn, Union Mill Road (various locations), Creek Road Shops, the Timbercrest Tot Lot/Parking Area or Thunderbird Farm.

According to the township, volunteers are welcome to choose their own location to clean for the day.

Once the cleanup is complete at noon, volunteers are then invited back to Laurel Acres Park to enjoy snacks and prizes.

Those interested in the cleanup event are asked to register ahead by contacting Samantha Higareda with Mt. Laurel Township through email at shigareda@mountlaurel.com or by phone at (856) 234-0001 ext. 1220.

As for the Shred Day event, the township is inviting residents to protect themselves and their families from identity theft while also taking a step toward going green, as well as reducing clutter at their homes.

Similar to past years, residents can present up to four bags or boxes of paper to an experienced operator, who will move the documents to a highly secure, mobile shredding unit, where any confidential material will soon be destroyed before residents’ eyes.

And keeping with the environmentally-friendly purpose of the day, 100 percent of all shredded material will be recycled.

Of note, only paper will be accepted at this event. The township asks that residents refrain from presenting plastic bags or metal, including three-ring binders or binder clips, as those materials will not be accepted.

However, paper clips and staples are acceptable.

The township also reminds residents that while this event is free, it is only open to township residents.

Also, the township will not accept commercial recycling items.

Those with additional questions can call the Mt. Laurel Township Public Works Office at  (856) 234-2070.
