“Allemande Left, Promenade, Do Si So, Grand Square” – these plus many more “calls” have been heard weekly at square dances in Pitman, Glassboro and Brooklawn for the last 25 years. On March 13, Busy B’s Square Dance Club celebrated a quarter century as an organization with a special evening of dinner and dancing at Masso’s in Glassboro. Special guest Mike Sikorsky from Arizona was the caller. The following weekend, 20 members of the club attended a Square Dance festival in Alexandria, Virginia.
Former ballroom dancers Ed and Lois White founded the club in 1994 after experiencing, and thoroughly enjoying, square dancing while on vacation in Colorado in 1990. Originally formed for singles, the group came to be known as Busy B’s (for Busy Bachelors and Bachelorettes). Today, club membership includes youth, singles and couples.
The Square Dance motto is “friendship set to music” and the aim is for folks to have good, clean fun. Additionally, dancing is an enjoyable form of exercise for the body and mind. The club also holds several collections during the year of canned goods, toys and educational materials for charitable organizations.
The club holds a weekly dance every Wednesday evening in Brooklawn. Square dance lessons are held in Mantua Township (just outside Pitman) on Thursdays. The club’s website is www.BusyBsSquares.weebly.com.
