The Cherry Hill Food Pantry is hosting its second annual Mall Walk to Fight Hunger at the Voorhees Town Center and wants you to sign up to attend and support the fight against hunger
A common solution to help solve hunger is for families to donate food to a food pantry in their area.
While residents can and should do that, another simple solution is to donate money to the organization. While many will often think that a pantry needs food to operate, nonprofits still require cash to own their buildings, collect donated items and more.
The Cherry Hill Food Pantry is preparing for its second annual Mall Walk to Fight Hunger on Sunday, April 7, and Executive Director Janet Giordano wants to make a memorable experience for those who support the nonprofit.
“I want to make it like a fun party,” Giordano said.
The second annual walk will take place indoors at the Voorhees Town Center with entertainment and registration at 1 p.m. and the walk starting at 2 p.m. Giordano got the idea for the pantry to host such an event after participating in a fundraiser for another organization.
“I had gone to another group’s indoor walk at the same mall, and I thought it was great because you’re not at the mercy of the weather,” Giordano said.
Throughout the afternoon, events include a selfie zone, musical entertainment, face painting, prizes and more. The walk costs $25 per person, coming with a T-shirt, with attendees walking laps around the main portion of the mall.
The food pantry is always accepting food donations and goes through ups and downs during the year in the amount of donations it receives. However, an afterthought in the heads of some when it comes to the pantry, Giordano says, is the money that helps make its work possible.
According to Giordano, the pantry is in serious need of help. While the pantry is always purchasing additional food to fill the pantry as needed, the nonprofit has additional expenses and is in need of additional funds to continue operating, as well as for general maintenance, such as a leaky roof in the center of its market.
“People often don’t think of us has having other expenses, but we do,” Giordano said. “How do you handle that if it’s not donated?”
Giordano hopes to get families involved in the mall walk and wants it to be an inclusive event for all to get involved in.
