The 18th annual Students United for Respect and Equality (S.U.R.E.) summit will be held at Rowan University’s Chamberlin Student Center on March 21 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
“The S.U.R.E. summit will provide students with the chance to come together and discuss pressing matters affecting them and their communities and learn new ways they can promote acceptance and better the climates in their schools and communities,” said Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger.
Roughly 320 students and 21 advisors will attend this year’s summit. This year’s theme will focus on embracing diversity and tolerance. During the summit, Freeholder Jim Jefferson, Liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services, will facilitate a series of workshops on stigma.
“Stigma is a widespread problem in schools,” said Freeholder Jefferson. “By teaching students to understand stigma and ways to end it, we are creating a group of young men and women who will take the information they’ve been given back to their schools and work to change the climate and improve how people treat each other.”
The S.U.R.E. Summit is coordinated by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, the Division of Human and Disability Services and local school representatives.
