Shawnee student wins scholarship for business idea

Eric Voros won a full scholarship to Rider University for his business idea called ‘Orion’s Belt’

Shawnee Scholarship: Special to the Sun, Peter G. Borg/Rider University: Shawnee student, Eric Voros, holds his first place certificate with Norm Brodsky, the Rider graduate who sponsors the scholarship.

Shawnee High School would like to congratulate senior Eric Voros for winning a full scholarship to Rider University after his business idea, called “Orion’s Belt” which was selected by a panel of Rider judges in a “Shark-Tank” style contest, named the “Norm Brodsky Business Concept Competition.”

The process involved writing an essay to describe his idea for “Orion’s Belt”, researching the potential market costs and demand, producing a prototype and finally writing and giving a speech, which Eric said he spent months preparing.

On January 26, in front of a large, crowded room Eric pitched his idea to the panel and found out later that night, at a banquet celebrating all of the participants, that he was the winner of the scholarship.

Eric’s idea, “Orion’s Belt,” is a stylish belt that someone would wear with everyday clothing, yet can quickly and easily turn into a life-saving tourniquet in the event of an emergency.

Eric commented, “It’s an awesome opportunity, for both myself as a student receiving this scholarship, and for my product that can hopefully save future lives.”

Principal Matthew Campbell added, “We are proud of Eric for not only winning the competition, but also for the way he won it. This was a true demonstration of the impact hard work, patience, and determination can have when you are dedicated to your goals.”
