The New Year is almost here, and perhaps, you haven’t had time to think about your resolutions for 2019. The Parks and Recreation Department is here to help. From fitness classes to dominoes, we have something for everyone.
If you’d like to up your activity level, Exit 4 Boot Camp is a great place to start for beginners or exercise enthusiasts looking for new challenges. Registration is month to month and is $30 ($50 for non-residents) for unlimited classes, which include everything from yoga to boot camp to kickboxing. “Yoga for Beginners” is offered on Thursday evenings from 6 to 7:15 p.m. It’s a great way to unwind and to improve flexibility and strength.
Pickle ball is the fastest growing sport in the country. It’s a hybrid of tennis and table tennis and can be played at any age or fitness level. The department now offers pickle ball during the day Monday through Friday and has added Tuesday evenings. Beginners are always welcome. Come try out this dynamic and fun sport.
For some low-key, fun team competition the department offers adult co-dd basketball and bowling. Adult Basketball starts in January on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Adult Mixed Bowling also begins in January and meets at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays at Laurel Lanes. Bowling is a great stress reducer, and you can form your own team or join one. There will be a Ping Pong Tournament coming soon. Please contact Rich Corbin for further information at [email protected]
Come visit the senior groups for some fellowship. The Senior Ladies meet on Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m. at the New Albany Recreation Center. The Senior Card group meets Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s a great way to meet new friends and neighbors. Mexican Train Dominoes is a fun way to engage the mind and socialize. It’s held on the third floor of the Church Street Recreation Center on Tuesdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. It’s free and no prior knowledge of the game is needed.
The new year has lots in store for children — from art classes that will be exploring the “Wonders of China,” to cooking and baking classes like homemade cannoli, sushi rolls and for the first time — Cupcake Wars. Teams of two will have a judged bake-off including a mystery ingredient. For young detectives, there is a CSI class that will teach forensics through scientific problem solving and how to assess a crime scene. Recreation Youth Athletic programs are a great way to try a new sport. There are clinics and team leagues.
Treat yourself and family to a concert. There are two free concerts coming in January. A Winter Concert will take place on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. featuring The Midiri Brothers on the third floor of the Church Street Recreation Center (donations of non-perishable food are welcome for families in need). Ian Gallagher will be performing on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. at the New Albany Recreation Center. He sings traditional Irish folk tunes and contemporary music.
Also, consider volunteer coaching. Giving back is rewarding and keeps us connected to the community. Keep checking the Parks and Recreation Department website: www.moorestownrec.com for new offerings (classes, concerts, and more) throughout the year.
