Stay safe this holiday season

Christmas trees, candles, electrical decorations and cooking all contribute to an increased number of home fires during December, making it one of the leading months for U.S. home fires.

To help everyone enjoy a fire-safe holiday season, the National Fire Protection Association is encouraging everyone to be aware of potential fire risks, hoping to ultimately minimize the amount of fires.

A new Christmas tradition has been started in Medford

Pictured are Rory Gras, Patricia O’Hara, Kate Piech, Mark Kaminski, Linda Kaminski, Angela Nicholls and Hanna Kaminski surrounding their decorated Christmas tree in honor of their loved ones John Nicholls and William O’Hara, at the inaugural event at St. Mary of the Lakes Church on Dec. 9.

On Dec. 9, the Knights and approximately 300 others gathered outside of St. Mary of the Lakes church for the illumination of 170 Christmas trees lining the perimeter of the church. Each tree was decorated and lit as a means of honoring a loved one who has passed.

The inaugural event began inside the church with a Christmas concert, followed by refreshments outside near a fire pit and ultimately the lighting of the trees outside, after Rev. Father Dan Swift blessed the trees.

The funds raised from the purchase of trees go to support St. Mary of the Lakes School and toward charity projects the Knights partake in within the community.
