Letter to the Editor: The true cost of tax abatement

Renee D’Orazio writes about the effect tax abatements have on the taxpayer

The current Washington Township administration believes that giving away tax payers’ money thru tax abatement programs benefits the community by creating more jobs. Let’s take a look at recent results. The amount of jobs created by these tax break programs is a drop in the bucket compared to the number of jobs lost by having a so many businesses closing in our Township.

On the Black Horse Pike corridor alone, within less than a couple miles we have seen 7 businesses (Friendly’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Denny’s, Einstein bagels, Bob Evans, Hitch RV) shut down since this administration has been in power. These businesses offered many local jobs. The closing of these businesses affects this community way beyond financially. These fast food restaurants along with hiring full-time employees also offer part-time jobs to many school-age children; they give a sense of responsibility to our younger people and a chance for them to contribute to our community in a positive way.

Putting more politicians in office and allowing them to continue with these types of reckless political decisions is not the answer to improve on our community. We need elected officials that put the needs of the community above politics. My husband of 42 years, Giancarlo D’Orazio is running as an Independent for Washington Township council along with his running mate, Dominick Ruggiero. They offer practical solutions to the issues we face today in our community. I know my husband well enough to assure my fellow residents that what he promises, he delivers. I’m voting for these gentlemen and I hope you will too.
