MIA announces scholarship recipients

Both recipients were members of the 2018 graduating class of Moorestown High School.

The Moorestown Improvement Association (MIA) is pleased to announce it awarded its annual MIA Scholarship of $1,000 to Katherine Holmbeck, and it awarded Ella Peterson with its annual Ellen Shiplee Scholarship, also for $1,000. Both recipients were members of the 2018 graduating class of Moorestown High School. They were selected because of their contributions to improving the greater Moorestown community.

Holmbeck began her freshman year at Bucknell University, where she expects to major in neuroscience with a minor in economics. She is planning to pursue a career in neurological medicine or research. Peterson entered Amherst College this fall and hopes to eventually work for a non-government organization (NGO) in fostering economic development in a third-world country.

While students at MHS, both of these young women were involved in a variety of school and community service activities. Holmbeck was active in tutoring, fundraising for local charities and volunteering for MooreKids, a group that provides programs for special needs children. Peterson was part of a small team of Interact Club students who raised $5,000 last year to support the work of the Autism NJ organization, and she also participated in numerous park clean-up and environmental campaigns.

Since its founding in 1904, the Moorestown Improvement Association has been dedicated to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in the community. Over the years, MIA members have actively engaged in and financially supported initiatives focused on historic preservation, heritage appreciation, environmental concerns, and perpetuating the township’s tree-planting tradition. The MIA congratulates their 2018 scholarship recipients, for being great models of the organization’s core values.
