Local veterans were honored in the 18 annual Gloucester County Military Service Medal Ceremony.
The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders presented the Gloucester County Military Service Medal to 95 veterans at the ceremony on Sept. 15. at the Riverwinds Community Center in West Deptford.
Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said, “The Freeholders commissioned the Gloucester County Service Medal in 2001 as a way to honor our veteran residents. This year we honored 95 veterans to show our gratitude for their service.”
Damminger said that after this year’s ceremony, more than 5,800 Military Service Medals will have been presented since the medal was commissioned. The medal is available to Gloucester County Veterans who have served on active duty in the military and received an honorable discharge.
“It is important to honor our veterans and in our county we do that in several ways,” Freeholder Giuseppe “Joe” Chila, Liaison to the County Office Veterans Affairs, said. “In addition to this token of appreciation, we provide veterans with a full-time Veterans Affairs Office; a full-time Gloucester County VA Health Clinic; and the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery because we believe that it is our duty to provide a service to these individuals who have provided their country a great service in the past.”
