Jewish Federation to donate more than 1,000 backpacks to needy students

Volunteers will be filling the backpacks with school supplies during an event Aug. 19 in Margate

The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey will be packing more than 1,000 brand new backpacks full of school supplies Sunday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. in Margate as part of its “Tools for School” program.

Throughout the year, a board of 20 middle and high school students has organized the fundraising efforts. Thanks to social media marketing, emails, dining events and corporate sponsors, Tools for School has raised more than $12,000 during the second half of the 2017–2018 school year.

Community members will form an assembly line at the packing event to fill the backpacks with pencils, pens, calculators, colored pencils, erasers, scissors, highlighters, glue sticks, sharpeners, folders, notebooks, index cards and more.

The backpacks will be distributed to local schools and organizations in need including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Camden, Foundation of Jewish Day Schools, Sons of Israel, Nemours Pediatrics at Jefferson University Hospital, Jewish Family Services of Atlantic County, Jewish Relief Agency Bala Cynwyd and Samost Jewish Family & Children’s Services.

Members of the program’s board attend Cherry Hill High School East, Henry C. Beck Middle School, Voorhees Middle School, Moorestown Friends School and Eastern Regional High School.

The packing event will be held at the Margate Municipal Building, located at 9001 Winchester Ave. For more information on the program, call (856) 751–9500 or contact toolsforschool@jfedsnj.org.
