Samantha Yerkes, Kevin Gillooly star in the pool at 2018 Cherry Bowl
As part of The Sun’s 2018 Cherry Bowl coverage, two star swimmers were featured early last week. Covered Bridge swimmer Samantha Yerkes got Cherry Bowl off on the right foot when she shattered a meet record in the first event of the day. Later in the meet, Kevin Gillooly of Barclay Farm got his chance to shine as he broke a meet record previously held by his brother, Pat.
Behind the scenes at the 2018 Cherry Bowl
The annual Cherry Bowl isn’t just about the swimmers in the pool, it’s a community gathering event that requires hundreds of volunteers. The Sun was invited behind the scenes at this year’s event to speak with the many volunteers who made the 59th annual Cherry Bowl go. Volunteers ranging from food preparation to facilities and operations to traffic control talked about their jobs.
Eleven candidates file to run for three seats on Cherry Hill Board of Education
There will be no shortage of choices in this year’s Cherry Hill Board of Education election as 11 candidates have filed to run for just three seats on the board, according to petitions filed with the Camden County Clerk’s office. Incumbents J. Barry Dickinson, Kathy Judge and Ken Tomlinson Jr. have all filed to run for re-election. Eight challengers have also filed, including a group called “ACT” and another group called “Kids Education First.”
Cherry Hill National 9U wins Cal Ripken regional title, to play in World Series next year
Cherry Hill National Athletic League will have one of its teams on a world stage in next year’s Cal Ripken 10-year-old World Series. Cherry Hill National 9U capped off an amazing summer with a victory in the Cal Ripken 9U Middle-Atlantic Regional Championship last Monday when they defeated West Perry, Pennsylvania, 4–1. The title clinches Cherry Hill National an automatic berth in next year’s World Series.
Salary increase, healthcare plan change part of new CHEA agreement
A memorandum of agreement ratified by the Cherry Hill Education Association and the Cherry Hill Board of Education spells out some small changes in the new, two-year contract approved between the two sides. According to the MOA, CHEA members will receive raises in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 school years. There will also be a shift in health plans for CHEA members.
