The next meeting will be held on July 24 at the Public Safety Building.
At Tuesday night’s meeting, the council discussed the move of the Medford Arts Center from 18 N. Main St.to 8 N. Main St. The group has already made settlement on this new location, and plans to have an open house Sept. 14–16.
The township previously agreed to pay for the group’s water, sewage, snow removal and grounds maintenance while leasing the building at 18 N. Main St.
The Medford Arts Center has requested once again to have the township pay for these expenses at its new location. However, since the building has been purchased and not leased, the council decided to only cover water and sewage payments.
“Generally we encourage the nonprofit groups to help us with township functions, we do like to see them stand alone but in certain situations we’ll offer small assistance,” Councilman Chris Buoni said. “The idea is to keep people in a volunteer mode, we don’t want to see people burn out.”
Following the discussion on the Medford Arts Center, Chief of Police Richard J. Meder stated he would like to update rules and regulations of the police department, including hearings and the disciplinary process through one centralized document, instead of coming out of an ordinance.
He stated the department has worked with solicitors, a labor attorney and the township manager on this document, and these changes have been worked on for the past 18 months.
The council approved the ordinance on first reading, requiring it be sent a copy of the updates as they are made.
Previously, if a rule or regulation needed to be changed it would have to go through council every time. With this approval, the township manager will have the right to promulgate changes. A public hearing will be held on Aug. 8.
In other news:
- Austin D. Wheeler is a new volunteer firefighter of Station 251; Thomas Keenan and Anthony Femminineo are new EMS members of Station 258; and Aiden Cohen will be promoted from junior firefighter to firefighter of Station 252.
- Speed bumps will not be added to Chairville Road because the speed limit is 50 mph, therefore they are not required.
The next meeting will be held on July 24 at the Public Safety Building located at 91 Union St. at 7 p.m.
