School might be out for the summer in Mt. Laurel, but that didn’t stop township council from honoring numerous student athletes at its meeting this week.

To tie one final bow on the 2018–2019 school year, township council honored the Lenape High School boys lacrosse and tennis teams, each of which won the South Jersey Group IV Championship for their respective sports this year.

Starting with lacrosse team, Mayor Rich Van Noord read a proclamation to honor the team, noting this past season was the fourth consecutive year for the team playing in the South Jersey Championship game.

Despite losing the previous two years to Montgomery High School at Montgomery, this year Lenape had the home field advantage.

That advantage showed when Lenape won the game, 10–8, in front of hundreds of fans at Lenape High School. The team also won the Olympic Conference Division for the third consecutive year, along with numerous players receiving All County, All Conference, All South Jersey, All State and All American recognition.

Members of the team honored in the proclamation included: Dom Albanese, Nick Allen, Will Blum, Gabe Bonner, Drew Bregman, Mason Bregman, Ross Capri, Luke Cole, Zach Cole, Matt Donaghy, Mike Galaida, Brett Gallagher, Matt Higgins, Matt Ingersoll, Turon Iwuji-Fisher, Durell Jenkins, Sean Kennedy, Matt Lajoie, Hunter Lippincott, Harrison Lombardo, Brady Long, Will Mercado, Jake Molina, Caleb Oswari, Rob Pensabene, Bryce Reece, Jack Reres, Erich Schutz, Matt Soutar, Riley Spitznas, Keval Thosani, Dante Venuto, Jeremy Welch and Kevin Yang.

The proclamation also honored the teams’ parents and coaches Bill Sutphin, Rob Hummel, Ryan Gunning, Dan Fowler, Brian Einstein and Anthony Brunetti for their work this season.

Turning to the tennis team, Van Noord also read a proclamation into the meeting’s record to honor the team and recount its accomplishments this past season.

This was the second consecutive year the team won the South Jersey Championship, and it was the second consecutive year in which the team upset №1 seed Cherry Hill High School East.

This season also marked the fourth time the team won the championship in the last 10 years and the first time the team won the Olympic Conference Championship since 2011.

Members of the team honored in the proclamation included: Aidan Cashin, Ahbi Chauhan, Brett Chow, Brandon Hsiao, Marc Ignarri, Jack Lavin, Jimmy Li, Sreejith Nair, Sidharth Peri, Allen Sha and Jeremy Shpigel.

The proclamation also honored the team’s parents and coaches Tony Guerrera and John Carnevale for their work during the season.

In congratulating each team, Van Noord said the township had many young men and women to be proud of in Mt. Laurel.

He also reflected on how the township works to ensure there is a bond between Lenape students and Mt. Laurel’s government.

“We had a lot of teams that did well at Lenape this year,” Van Noord said. “We’re very proud of the coaches and administration at Lenape for producing great scholar athletes.”
