Bernard Gmitter was charged after alleged inappropriate communication with a female student.
A Seneca High School JROTC instructor faced charges of cyber harassment on May 29, according to the New Jersey State Police. Bernard Gmitter, 65, of Cherry Hill, was arrested and charged with cyber harassment for allegedly having inappropriate communication with a female student. He was also charged with prostitution, for an unrelated incident.
Gmitter was employed by the school for less than a year.
Seneca principal, Jeff Spector, sent out a letter addressed to parents and guardians of Seneca students on June 6, stating that the allegations did not include any conduct of a physical nature.
“As soon as the Administration was made aware of the situation, it was reported to the local authorities, and the individual involved is not permitted to be present on school grounds or at school events,” the letter said.
A replacement co-instructor has been secured to ensure the JROTC program will continue as planned. There are no anticipated changes to the program going forward, including the summer 2018 activities.
“As always, the well-being of our students, staff and our entire community remains our highest priority. To that end, the Administration has communicated with specific parents throughout the investigation and will continue to make supports available for students,” Spector wrote.
The letter concluded by encouraging all questions and concerns to be directed to a Seneca staff member or administrator.
