Annual Burlington County Garden Expo set for May 5

The county and Rutgers Master Gardener Program of Burlington County will host the Burlington County Agricultural Center in Moorestown.

The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders is inviting residents to shop local for everything they need to begin planting their home gardens.

Burlington County Freeholder Deputy Director Linda Hughes has announced that on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the county is once again partnering with the Rutgers Master Gardener Program of Burlington County to host the annual Garden Expo at the Burlington County Agricultural Center in Moorestown. The event features local farmers and nurseries offering a variety of native plants, vegetables, annuals, perennials, and more, as well as gardening workshops, expert advice and live entertainment.

“This family-fun event is one-stop shopping for everything that our residents with green thumbs need to kick off their spring garden plantings,” said Hughes, liaison to the County Department of Resource Conservation. “Before you go out to a big box retailer, stop by our Garden Expo to support our local farmers and small business owners and get answers to all your gardening questions.”

Workshops will be held throughout the day starting at 9:30 a.m. and cover a wide range of gardening topics including healthy eating, growing strawberries, backyard composting, and a cooking demonstration with ingredients that can be easily grown at home. Children can make a planter for mom for Mother’s Day for a small fee, the proceeds of which benefit Heart and Hand.

“I am so pleased to continue to help offer this annual event for our residents and provide an opportunity to highlight our thriving local agricultural industry,” Hughes said.

For decades, the Freeholder Board has worked toward land preservation by protecting more than 61,000 acres of farmland and open space and supporting a local agricultural community.

In 2005, the Freeholder Board established the Burlington County Agricultural Center as an educational facility focused on food production, health and nutrition, and land stewardship. The Agricultural Center offers a weekly farmers market on Saturday’s from May to October, as well as special events and educational and culinary programs held throughout the year.

The Garden Expo is a rain or shine event with free admission and parking. For more information, please visit www.burlcoagcenter.com or call (856) 642–3850.

The Burlington County Agricultural Center is located at 500 Centerton Road, Moorestown, NJ 08057.
