Committee without a Republican sinceĀ 2001
The deadline for candidate applications came and went. Both Robert Zimmerman, deputy mayor, and Shawn Layton, committeeman, will run as uncontested Democrats.
Zimmerman has served as an elected member since June 2008. Layton since JuneĀ 2017.
Zimmerman said, āIāve spent my entire life serving the public as a police officer and now as a deputy mayor. I thoroughly enjoy giving back to Mantua Township, and helping the friends, neighbors and constituents throughout this wonderful community. If elected, Iām eager to serve another term and look forward to improving on all the great things Mantua has toĀ offer.ā
Layton said, āThe main reason I would like to run again is because Mantua is my hometown and has been my hometown my whole life. I also like the progression and proactiveness that the committee has and the positive impact we provide for our township residents and visitors. Thereās a lot of good things in the future that are going to be happening in Mantua, and Iād love to be a part ofĀ it.ā
The last Republican to serve on the Mantua Township Committee was Robert Hudgins, who served untilĀ 2001.
Barring a significant amount of write-in votes, Zimmerman and Layton will continue to serve on the committee. No Republicans are registered for the primary election.
The primary election is scheduled for 6 a.m. through 8 p.m., Tuesday, JuneĀ 5
The general election is scheduled for 6 a.m. through 8 p.m., Tuesday, NovemberĀ 6.
