Alzheimer’s Association Greater New Jersey announces dates and places for Walk to End Alzheimer’s

With offices in Totowa and Marlton, the association will hold the walk in five locations throughout the state this September and October.

With offices in Totowa and Marlton, the Alzheimer’s Association Greater New Jersey Chapter has announced that the group is organizing five “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” events throughout Central and Northern New Jersey.

New this year, the chapter has added a fifth venue at Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna, for participants in Morris-Sussex-Warren-Hunterdon-Somerset counties and has relocated the Essex-Hudson-Union event to the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange.

To kick-off the new Northwest New Jersey walk, the chapter is hosting two free and open-to-the-public events.

A Volunteer Recruitment Luncheon is being held on Tuesday, April 17, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and a Volunteer Recruitment Social is being held on Thursday, April 26 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both will be held at the Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex Senior Center, located at 72 Eyland Ave., in Succasunna.

The Greater New Jersey Chapter is a voluntary, not-for-profit health organization focused on Alzheimer’s care, support and research in the state.

The 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s dates and venues are as follows:

  • Sunday, Sept. 9, Northwest New Jersey at Horseshoe Lake Park Recreation Complex, Succasunna
  • Sunday, Sept. 23, Mercer County at The College of New Jersey, Ewing
  • Saturday, Sept. 29, Essex-Hudson-Union at South Mountain Recreation Complex/Clipper Pavilion (9 Cherry Lane), West Orange
  • Sunday, Oct. 14, Bergen-Passaic at Overpeck Park, Ridgefield Park
  • Sunday, Oct. 21, Bradley Beach at Bradley Beach Boardwalk (5th and Ocean Avenues), Bradley Beach.

As the Alzheimer’s Association’s largest annual fundraising event, officials say the Walk to End Alzheimer’s attracts more 500,000 walkers nationally.

In New Jersey, last year’s Greater New Jersey Chapter walks drew more than 4,000 participants, 500 teams and raised more than $669,000.

Held rain or shine, walk-day events include a live DJ, team photo opportunities and post-walk refreshments. Individuals, organizations, business groups and corporate teams are encouraged to join as participants, sponsors and volunteers. Corporate, foundation and individual sponsorships also are being sought.

There is no fee to start or join a team or participate as an individual. Participants need only set a personal fundraising goal, kick-start it with a self donation and reach out to family, friends and colleagues to reach the pre-established fundraising milestone by walk day.

In addition to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the Greater New Jersey Chapter provides vital funding for community-based and online education programs as well as worldwide research initiatives, including clinical trials.

Officials say the events also are a critical source of funding for the association’s 24/7 Helpline, a vital round-the-clock, full-service resource in 200-plus languages for people with memory loss, caregivers, healthcare professionals and the general public.
