Third District Legislators Recognize National Heart Awareness Month

Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Deputy John Burzichelli, and Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro urge residents to be proactive about heart health

In recognition of February as National Heart Awareness Month, residents should be sure to educate themselves on the importance of heart health and the steps they can take to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women across the United States, so it is essential to be proactive about your heart health.

Heart disease claims more lives annually than all forms of cancer combined — approximately one million lives annually. The symptoms of cardiovascular disease differ between women and men, but common signs typically include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea or lightheadedness. Women are also more likely to experience symptoms other than chest pains when suffering a heart attack.

If you or someone else is experiencing any of these symptoms, the best course of action is to call 911 for assistance immediately.

Cardiovascular disease is preventable. Making heart-healthy choices, knowing your family health history and the risk factors for heart disease, having regular check-ups with your physician, eating healthy, and staying active are the best ways to combat the dangers of heart disease and promote better heart health.

We urge residents to take this opportunity to raise awareness about prevention and encourage your family, friends, and community to live heart healthy lives.
