Cherry Hill cantor hosting Super Bowl party for special needs children and families

Cantor Scott Borsky will host the first special needs Super Bowl party at Spring Hills Cherry Hill Assisted Living on Sunday, Feb. 4 beginning at 6 p.m.

There will be no shortage of parties on Feb. 4 when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

However, a Jewish cantor and Cherry Hill resident wants to make sure there will be one Super Bowl party held specifically for the South Jersey special needs community.

Cantor Scott Borsky, founder of the non-denominational Jewish organization Synagogue Without Walls, has teamed with Spring Hills Cherry Hill Assisted Living to host a special needs Super Bowl party. The party will take place at Spring Hills, located at 1450 Marlton Pike East in Cherry Hill, on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.

Borsky serves many families around South Jersey through Synagogue Without Walls. The organization provides many spiritual services and support for area Jewish families who don’t belong to a synagogue.

Through Synagogue Without Walls, Borsky has come in contact with many members of the special needs population. After the Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl, Borsky realized special needs families would want to be a part of the excitement and wanted to give them a safe and fun place to watch the game.

“I want to encourage families dealing with special needs to come together to share this opportunity of community, joy, togetherness and blessings centering around our mutual support of the Philadelphia Eagles,” Borsky said.

Allowing the special needs population to be part of the Super Bowl is important for Borsky. He feels there are many positive things kids can take away from watching the game, including the importance of good sportsmanship, hard work and setting and achieving goals. He also mentioned it’s an opportunity for youth to watch the game with some of Spring Hills’ senior residents.

Borsky serves the community at Spring Hills and approached them about hosting the party inside the building’s auditorium. After receiving approval, Borsky began spreading the word and planning for the party.

The special needs Super Bowl party will have multiple elements to it. Guests will be able to enjoy plenty of food and drinks as they watch the game inside Spring Hills’ auditorium.

Outside the auditorium will be plenty of activities, including a Super Bowl arts and crafts table. Plenty of space is being provided outside the auditorium for parents and their children to engage in whatever activity they may choose.

“There will be activities outside of the theater,” Borsky said. “They can be brought by the families that will cater to their children.”

Borsky has tried to spread the word about the party through social media and his interactions with local families. As word spread, he began hearing from groups who wanted to support the event.

“Local special needs organizations have contacted me to put the information on their websites, to send out to their families and their communities,” Borsky said.

Borsky added this event is open to all families in South Jersey, regardless of religious affiliation. There is also no cost to attend.

“It’s open to the entire, wonderful South Jersey community,” he said. “Anyone with special needs children, they’re welcome to come by.”

Guests who plan to attend the event are asked to RSVP by calling or texting Borsky at (267) 971–8799 or emailing [email protected] prior to Feb. 4.
