Restructuring of the department comes following the retirement of Chief Rodney Sawyer in May
Mantua Township held a special meeting on Jan. 16 to acknowledge the promotion and swearing-in of four individuals at the Mantua Police Department.
Sgts. Brian Grady and Shaun Butler were both promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Grady, sworn in by Mayor Pete Scirrotto, joined the police department in 2002, and Butler, sworn-in by Deputy Mayor Bob Zimmerman, in 2006.
Promoted to the rank of sergeant were corporals Arthur Drew Hayes and William Murphy. Hayes, sworn-in by Zimmerman, joined the department in 2004, and Murphy, sworn-in by Scirrotto, in 2006.
The promotions come during a time of reconstruction at the department. Last May, Chief Rodney Sawyer retired and in his place is Chief Darren White, who was sworn-in at a ceremony in August.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said White, referring to Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony. “It’ll be nice to have them come in with new ideas; it is an exciting time.”
As the department continues on its path forward, many expressed excitement with the number of officers moving up the ranks.
“We are thrilled and excited for the officers who were promoted, and we are excited about the direction we are going under Chief White,” Zimmerman said.
