Sun Editorial: We have some suggestions for New Year’s resolutions for our elected leaders

They’re just a few basic statements that add up to: “I’ll do the job you elected me to do.”

It’s a new year so it’s time for some New Year’s resolutions. Since our elected leaders are hard at work doing really important things, we thought we’d make a few resolutions for them. And then hold our breath until they come true. Just kidding on the last part.

Here’s a good place to start: I will recognize all of the money that’s in the government budget I oversee belongs to the people, not the government. The people worked hard for that money and trust me to use it wisely and for the greater good. I will spend it accordingly.

Next: I will put the welfare of those same people above all else. That means they are more important than my political party, my re-election bid and special-interest groups who sometimes give me lots of money to run for office. I will be a true public servant.

How about this: I will work with other members of government, regardless of their political party, to support good ideas and oppose bad ones. In other words, I’ll value common sense and good judgment over political goals.

And: I will be a decent human being and treat everyone with respect. If I make a mistake or do something stupid, I will admit it, apologize and do whatever it takes to make it right.

Finally: I will be compassionate and help those who need it. I will be a voice for those who feel they have no voice in government.

There you have it, politicians. No difficult diets or impossible to maintain exercise routines. Just a few basic statements that add up to: I’ll do the job you elected me to do.

Now that that’s out of the way, the rest of us can sit back and enjoy the new year with nothing to worry about.
