Cherry Bowl has become the single most popular annual event for Cherry Hill Sun readers. The Sun’s recap of the all-Cherry Hill swim meet frequently ranks among the most popular stories each year. This past year was no exception as the story of Erlton Swim Club’s triumph in the 2017 Cherry Bowl was the seventh most read story on the Cherry Hill Sun website.
Erlton’s 2017 Cherry Bowl title was special for a number of reasons. The title coincided with the 50th anniversary of the swim team’s first year of competition in 1967.
“It really shows the legacy we’ve had in Cherry Hill,” 18-year-old Erlton swimmer Daniel Brown said. “It’s really cool that the 50th anniversary we win Cherry Bowl.”
The win also allowed Erlton to avenge its 2016 Cherry Bowl loss, when Old Orchard Swim Club edged out the Gators for the first place. Erlton also lost to Old Orchard during a 2017 Tri-County Swimming Pool Association regular season dual meet. However, Erlton head coach Mike Wilkinson believed his team was determined to go all-out and re-take the Cherry Bowl for the fourth time in sixth years.
“The boys and the girls really wanted to bring the bowl back home for year 50,” he said.
The Erlton seniors were especially excited to win Cherry Bowl, especially after the team fell short the previous year.
“All of us have swam for so long that it feels good to end it like this,” 18-year-old Tory Yost said.
