The Cherry Hill Sun’s most read high school sports story of 2017 didn’t involved a championship team or a record-setting performance. It was instead about two seniors on the 2016–17 Cherry Hill High School East boys swimming team who worked hard to become key members.
Christian Termine and Ethan Staiman, 2017 graduates of Cherry Hill East, both played key roles on a Cougar that that won the NJSIAA Group A state championship. Termine was one of Cherry Hill East’s better sprint freestyle swimmers and Staiman was fast in the backstroke.
The two managed to play key roles on varsity despite having been cut from the team as freshmen. Termine and Staiman shared their journey in a January interview with the Cherry Hill Sun.
“It was a little crushing,” Staiman said of not making the team. “I wanted to swim and I was told, you’re not going to swim. After talking to my parents and my winter coach, I realized I needed to get better.”
After being cut, Termine and Staiman both worked hard to improve their conditioning and form in the pool. Their efforts would pay off.
“I improved my stamina, my speed and especially my passion for the sport,” Termine said. “After doing a lot more intensive practices in different programs, it showed me how much dedication is needed for swimming.”
“I’ve got a lot better stamina,” Staiman said. “I can do longer distance events whereas freshman year, if you asked me to swim more than four laps, I wouldn’t be able to do it competitively.”
