Students attend Coding Night events at schools throughout Lenape Regional High School District

The night was inspired by the book “Hidden Figures,” which was the district’s selection for this year’s “One Book” program.

On Dec. 14, each of the four high schools in the Lenape Regional High School District offered a special “Coding Night.”

The night was inspired by the book “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly, which was the district’s selection for this year’s “One Book” program.

The “One Book” initiative had students and staff at each school read the same book during their summer break, as opposed to the former “One Book, One School” program, which had every district school choose its own book.

With the selection of “Hidden Figures,” district staff were able to create district-wide opportunities to strengthen the LRHSD community, including the recent Coding Night events.

As “Hidden Figures” focuses on women who excelled in the fields of mathematics and science, district officials say the purpose of the coding night was tocreate an opportunity for students to interact with the basics of computer science, and to foster the idea that anyone — regardless of age and background — can experience the basics of coding and have success.

According to officials, the events were for existing LRHSD students as well as those from local sending districts.

With an online component as well as an unplugged version, officials say students were encouraged to think creatively and use their imagination to problem solve.
