MTC performance to benefit Puerto Rico

The Moorestown Theater Company will donate a portion of their proceeds to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

For the second time in three months, the Moorestown Theater Company (MTC) will present its teenagers performing the “School Edition” of the classic musical “West Side Story.” There will be four performances by a 30-member teenage cast on Saturday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day at Westfield Friends School located at 2201 Riverton Road in Cinnaminson.

Director of the show and MTC’s Producing Artistic Director, Mark Morgan said cast member Rebecca Vidal, who plays Anita, had the idea to raise funds for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. Tickets are $13 with $2 per ticket being donated to the UNICEF USA Hurricane Relief Fund for Puerto Rico.

“For me being in West Side Story is important because it involves Puerto Rican culture,” said Vidal, a 16-year-old junior at Shawnee High School. “It was the first big musical to have Puerto Ricans in it. Being in West Side Story, especially with the role I have, makes both me and my family proud as we are Puerto Ricans.”

Vidal said she is happy that MTC is donating $2 from each ticket to the UNICEF USA Hurricane Relief Fund for Puerto Rico because she has family in Puerto Rico.

“Being able to help my family and all of the people of Puerto Rico that are struggling right now is very important to me,” Vidal said. “It makes me beyond grateful that the Moorestown Theater Company is making this opportunity to help Puerto Rico possible.”

Morgan said the show is also another chance for people who may have missed out on the August production to see the show.

“So many people said that they missed our wonderful August production of this under-performed classic musical,” Morgan said. “So we wanted to bring it back during the school year. We are thrilled to present it again to the audiences of Burlington County.”

“West Side Story, School Edition,” is the classic musical condensed for high school age performers. The production has a PG-13 rating due to some on-stage violence. Tickets can be purchased online at www.MoorestownTheaterCompany.org or at the door beginning one hour before curtain time in the lobby at WFS. Call MTC at (856)778–8357 for more information.
