Students become teachers for a day on National Teach German Day

The German language is being celebrated all week in the Washington Township schools

The German language is being celebrated all week in the Washington Township Schools, and it stepped into the spotlight on Wednesday at Chestnut Ridge Middle School for National Teach German Day.

Teacher Kayla Berry picked high-achieving students from each of her classes and gave them the job of making up lessons to teach their classmates. In each of the classes, Berry broke the students up into groups, and they moved from station to station with their teachers for a day.

Some of the student teachers used online programs like Kahoot! to create academic games. Others used flash cards or even good-old white boards to teach a lesson.

“This was all up to them. I gave them topics and they ran with it,” Berry said. “I think a lot of them are realizing that it’s not as easy as they thought being a teacher.”

“It’s torture. They don’t want to listen at all,” seventh-grader Allyson Wernik said in agreement.
