Mr. Behrend’s new book, Rebuilt from Broken Glass: A German Jewish Life Remade in America, contains many of the stories he shared with the students including his memory of Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass.
Holocaust survivor and author Fred Behrend came to speak to Seneca High School’s Literature of the Holocaust class on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2017. Mr. Behrend recalled his remarkable life including his escape from Germany during the Holocaust. Mr. Behrend’s new book, Rebuilt from Broken Glass: A German Jewish Life Remade in America, contains many of the stories he shared with the students including his memory of Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass. In addition to his story of survival, Mr. Behrend left the class with some words of wisdom about the human experience and enduring tragedy.
Junior Shannon Conover said, “Hearing Mr. Behrend’s story made the literature come to life. It made me realize that his story was like those of thousands of other that need to be heard and retold.” Literature of the Holocaust teacher Mr. Cassel said, “Having people who witnessed history speak about their experiences to students helps them connect to the things we do in class. We are grateful to have Mr. Behrend come to Seneca and give our students this valuable experience.”
