Other highlights included raffle licenses and updates on the Skeet Road paving project.

The July 5 Medford Township Council meeting kicked off with a proclamation for the Medford Memorial baseball team, which won the Simon Cup Final last month.

The team won the championship as a №6 seed, making it the underdog in all of its playoff wins against №3 Rosa International, №2 Glen Landing and №4 Moorestown.

“It was amazing,” head coach Steve Fasolo told The Sun in June. “It was such a great group of kids.”

Some of the standout players on the team, according to Fasolo, were pitcher Petey Tronosky, pitcher Brian Muller, third baseman Cole Catalano, centerfielder Donovan Dougherty, shortstop/second baseman John Bukofsky, left fielder Luke Wicker, right fielder Kevin Caldini and catcher Branden Petterson.

Fasolo also credited his assistant coach, Joni-Jean Crivello, for her help coaching the team.

It was the first time the middle school won the championship in 12 years and only the second time in 19 years.

“We’re really proud of you guys, and I’m sure your parents, coaches and teachers are as well.” Mayor Charles Watson said at the council meeting before reading the proclamation.

The Simon Cup trophy was at the meeting.

Two raffle and 50/50 licenses were approved at the meeting. One was for Paw it 4ward Foundation for an event to be held Sept. 16 at Indian Acres Farm. The other was for Shawnee Corner’s Club for an event to be held July 15 at Shawnee High School.

Additionally, town council approved $210,000 provided by the state Department of Transportation to use for phase II of the Skeet Road paving project on the ordinance’s second reading. Council will only be using the NJDOT’s funds to complete the project. Phase I of the Skeet Road paving project cost $196,000, all of which was also supplied by NJDOT.

“We would prefer to use state money for this,” township clerk Kathy Burger said.

The next town council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on July 18 in the council/court room of the township’s Public Safety Building at 91 Union St.
