Lanterns to light Addiction Awareness Vigil on June 19
There are flickers of hope spread throughout Washington Township thanks to the district’s recent Lantern Project, a community service project brainstormed by Washington Township High School senior Lyndsey Ferraino, bringing more than 750 students in all grades together for the creation of colorful Mason jar lanterns.
After Orchard Valley Middle School teacher Sharon McMullen and a number of OVMS student volunteers prepped 1,000 lantern-making kits, students crafted the lanterns using mason jars, tissue paper, glue and battery-powered tea light candles. The project, hosted by the WTHS Changing Our World Project, was sponsored by Kennedy Health, and every lantern was affixed with a label that read “Kennedy Health: Lighting your way to better health.”
The sale of the lanterns has generated $4,700. Monies will be donated to families of several children in need in the district. The flickers of these lanterns will turn into a heartwarming glow when all students who took part in the project and purchased lanterns are invited to join interested community members in an Addiction Awareness Vigil on Monday, June 19, at Washington Lake Park. The vigil begins with live music and speakers at 7 p.m., with the lantern vigil starting at 8:15 p.m. An additional 150 lanterns will be available for purchase at the event.
