Pieces from students at each of the district’s schools are on display at the township’s municipal building through May 25.
Some of Evesham’s youngest artists got a chance to shine last week with the opening night gala for the school district’s 23rd annual “Eyes on Art” show.
The walls, tables and most of the open surfaces of the Evesham Township Municipal Complex were covered with artwork from students, with displays mostly intermixed between ages and schools.
Pieces are on display at the municipal building through May 25, with several set to remain at the township building or school district administrative building throughout the year.
District director of curriculum Danielle Magulick said the show ties into the idea of authentic learning and shows students their work can go before a real audience.
“Every year is another opportunity to really show that their work is valued and a lot of people are looking at it and it’s meaningful,” Magulick said.
Magulick said she believes one of the best features of the Evesham Township School District is its programs and the value it places on the whole child when it comes to development of curriculum.
With every student in the district different, Magulick said the show could focus a spotlight on kids who have talents in a variety of areas.
“It’s really important to us to make sure that we have visual and performing arts and content areas, so it’s really a balance. By having that balance, it’s not just about academics, but it’s about social and emotional areas as well and allows every kid to shine,” Magulick said.
According to Magulick, the show features about 75 pieces of work from each of the district’s elementary schools and about 125 pieces from the middle schools, with categories such as animals, design, people, still life, fantasy, multicultural and this year’s main theme of nature.
Superintendent John Scavelli Jr., who was also at the opening night gala, returned the pieces of artwork that were selected at last year’s show to remain in the municipal building and school district administration building throughout the year.
Scavelli described the show as another way to showcase the work of the district’s students, art teachers and curriculum department, as well as bring the community together.
“It’s an opportunity for the kids to showcase their talent and bring the school district together as a whole. It’s a very nice community event and gives the kids some exposure for their artwork that they wouldn’t normally get,” Scavelli said.
Pieces in the show will be on display at the township’s municipal building on weekdays through May 25, with exhibit hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
