“A Time of Discovery Festival” will be held at the Riverton Yacht Club on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in celebration of the last remaining steamboat landing on the Delaware River. The event’s organizers, The Riverton Steamboat Landing Foundation, are encouraging residents in the surrounding towns of Palmyra and Cinnaminson to join in on the food, music, educational exhibits and tours of the pier.
The free event will feature sailboat races and tours of the historic clubhouse. The festival will also play host to interactive exhibits with science teachers and other local volunteer residents doing pollution demonstrations. In addition, the Philadelphia Seaport Museum has loaned the Riverton Steamboat Landing Foundation a whale boat that can be viewed on land along with material teaching the history and uses of whale boats.
There will also be groups doing arts and crafts highlighting the river’s importance to the area. Residents of Riverton, Palmyra and Cinnaminson use the pier for sailing, yachting and kayaking, said Riverfront Steamboat Landing Foundation member Catherine Sommers.
Admission to the festival is free but donations are encouraged. For more information, visit www.rivertonsteamboatlanding.org/index.html.
