The documentary, “13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment,” will be shown at Christ Our Light Catholic Church.

Community members from around South Jersey are invited to Christ Our Light Catholic Church in Cherry Hill on May 18 as Unitarian Universalist Church of Cherry Hill hosts a screen of the documentary, “13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment.” The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Christ Our Light parish center behind the church.

The documentary’s title refers to the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery. The documentary is an historical survey that directly links slavery to today’s prison-industrial complex. In this thought-provoking, 90-minute film, director Ava DuVernay interviews scholars, activists and both Republican and Democratic politicians who analyze the criminalization of African-Americans and the U.S. prison boom.

Following the film, there will be a group discussion and light refreshments. Because of the violence and language in the film, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
