WTHS junior wins national photography award

Ryan Andrews earned first place in the architecture category of the 2017 Photographic Society of America’s Youth Showcase

Ryan Andrew’s winning photo, “City Hall”

Washington Township High School junior Ryan Andrews’ photo “City Hall” recently earned first place in the architecture category of the 2017 Photographic Society of America’s Youth Showcase. The recognition included a $175 award from PSA, a one-year PSA membership and subscription to the “PSA Journal.

Andrews’ winning shot, as well as a brief biography and his photo, will appear in the September issue of “PSA Journal.” The article will focus on photography by young people, and their participation in the PSA Youth Showcase. Additionally, “City Hall” will be included in the Youth Showcase program presented to the PSA membership at the society’s annual conference in Pittsburgh from Oct. 10 through 13. The winning photo also will be placed on the PSA website (www.psa-photo.org) under the Youth Photography link.

“Ryan is an amazing photography student,” WTHS animation and digital photography teacher Kirsten Smith said. “He is really interested in the art of photography and spends most of his free time traveling around South Jersey and the Philadelphia area taking photos. His subjects range from architecture and abandoned warehouses to long exposure photography. He has a natural gift for getting great perspective shots and is always striving for ways to take better pictures. He is also an asset in class, where he helps his classmates with their photography techniques and radiates enthusiasm for class projects.”

Andrews entered numerous photos in March to the Ocean County Camera Club, a local club that holds a yearly student photography contest. He received a Judges Choice award for “City Hall,” as well as a Judges Choice award for his photo “Mirror.” The club then submits all winning photos to the national PSA contest.
