Burlington Township PD charge alleged drug dealer in overdose death

Following an investigation by BTPD, Jose M. Laporte Junior was arrested and charged in connection with heroin death.

Following an investigation by the Burlington Township Police Department, Jose M. Laporte Junior has been charged with strict liability drug induced death, possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of heroin.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, the Burlington Township Police Department was dispatched to a medical emergency at the Sunset Heights Apartment complex located on Sunset Road in Burlington. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive 35 year old male, who was later pronounced deceased on the scene from a heroin overdose.

Members of the Burlington Township Police Department Investigations Bureau initiated an investigation, during which they identified Jose M. Laporte, Jr. — a 24 year old male from Camden — as the dealer who sold the heroin that led to the victim’s death.

At approximately noon on Friday, April 14, BTPD detectives located and arrested Laporte in the parking of 1107 Sunset Road in Burlington. They were assisted in this arrest by detectives from the Willingboro Police Department.

Laporte was charged and lodged in Burlington County Jail pending an initial hearing.

The Burlington Township Police Department have stated that they recognize “the dreadful menace” that opiate addiction presents within New Jersey and other states. The department has said they are committed to identifying any person who seeks to profit by preying on the addictions of others and will exhaust all investigative efforts to ensure those individuals are held accountable under law.
