Alfreda Lorraine Stephens Macon was born in Bartlow County, Fl. on February 6, 1915 to the late Taylor Harry Stephens, Sr. and Willie Mae Hamilton Stephens. She departed this life in the dawn of morning of Tuesday, April 4 at her home in Moorestown.
At the young age of three, Alfreda was brought by her loving and devoted parents to Philadelphia. She was educated in the Philadelphia School System and graduated from Simon Gratz High School on June 25, 1936.
Following high school, Alfreda married the man of her dreams, the late Eugene Macon. She later became the mother of their only child, Charles Macon. They were blissfully married for 51 years before his death.
Alfreda was predeceased by all of her siblings: Taylor H. Stephens, Ledley Stephens, Dr. Hamilton Stephens and Laura Kinsey. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Jacoby Talbert. Alfreda was a very loyal and dedicated caretaker to her parents, siblings and family throughout her lifetime.
Alfreda was employed by the United States Marine Corps and worked at the Frankford Arsenal. A trailblazer, she and her colleagues integrated the unit under the order of President Roosevelt. She was employed with the federal government for 38 years. Upon retirement, she and her husband travelled extensively all over the world.
Alfreda moved to Moorestown in 1961 and joined Bethel AME in 1964. She was a longstanding and dedicated member, devoting much of her time assisting in Bethel’s capital projects. She loved her church and stayed connected with the happenings of the congregation through regular visits and calls of her fellow members even when she couldn’t attend.
Alfreda leaves to cherish her memory: her son Charles Macon, her granddaughter Victoria Talbert, her grandson Charles “Chris” Talbert, several great-grandchildren, her niece Morriscene Thomas, her nephews Wesley Stephens and Hamilton Stephens, Jr., her sister-in-law Helen Stephens, her primary caregiver Sonia Williamson, her secondary caregivers Nadia Whonder, Keisha Williams and Denise Topping, her longtime neighbors the Mateo and Thomas families, her Bethel AME family, a large host of family and friends and “her pet” Maltese, Errold.
Alfreda’s homegoing services will be held, Saturday, April 15 at Bethel AME Church, 512 N. Church Street, Moorestown, 08057. The viewing will take place from 9 — 10 a.m., and the service will begin at 10 a.m. The interment will be at the Rolling Green Memorial Cemetery, West Chester, PA.
