Barton Arboretum to offer special nature-themed activities.
Usher in springtime — and warmer weather — with a series of events at Medford Leas. Through the “Pathways to Learning at Medford Leas” programs, residents and the public are invited to learn about and enjoy nature through a robust program of activities, many at no cost.
The Annual Lewis W. Barton Arboretum Lecture on Saturday, April 1 will focus on the increasingly popular native wildflower meadows. Speaker Larry Weaner, the principle and founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, will share his expertise and unique ideas for designing native meadows that thrive, resulting in long-term, easily managed landscapes that harbor a myriad of birds and butterflies and provide color and texture throughout the year.
This event will take place at the Medford Leas Medford Campus and will run from 11 a.m. to noon followed by lunch, tours of the Barton Arboretum and shopping until 1:30 p.m. There is no fee for this event.
Those who want to appreciate a spring bloom in person may enjoy a Daffodil Daze Walk at the Medford Leas Medford Campus Lois Forrest Nature Center. Walks take place on Wednesday, April 5 or Wednesday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to noon, and offer visitors a guided tour of the thousands of daffodils in a collection that was started by one of Medford Leas’ earliest residents, Marjorie (Midge) Ilgenfritz. This event is also free, and the registration deadline is Saturday, April 1.
Individuals who want to start small with a garden in their own kitchen may enjoy the Container Kitchen Gardening Make and Take event on Wednesday, May 17. Guests can explore a wide array of herbs to select plants for their own kitchen container garden. Debbie Lux, Medford Leas horticulturalist, will lead the workshop and supply all materials.
This workshop takes place at the Lumberton Campus Community Center. The first session runs from 10 a.m. to noon and the second session runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fee for this event is $25, and the registration deadline is Friday, May 5.
Lux will lead another event, the Wednesday Walk in the Garden, on Wednesday, May 24. This is yet another chance to enjoy nature with a guided tour of the Courtyard Gardens. The Medford Leas Medford Campus is home to 32 uniquely designed Courtyard Gardens. Guests will explore their unique styles and find inspiration in the variety of plantings and designs.
This event takes place at the Medford Campus Nature Center. The walk is from 10 a.m. to noon and is free. The registration deadline is Friday, May 19.
