Mayor’s Message — Read Across America, Community Garden and Social Media

Mayor Joann Gattinelli read to students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School and announces opening of community garden

Mayor Joann Gattinelli visited Ms. Ahn’s fifth grade class fro Read Across America Week at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.

Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss’ birthday, is annually celebrated on March 2 to promote learning and reading as a part of students’ daily routines. In support of our schools’ participation, Business Administrator Jason Gonter, Chief of Police Patrick Gurcsik and I were fortunate enough to visit Ms. Ahn’s fifth-grade class at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School on March 2.

During our visit, I was happy to share the story “Clark the Shark” with the young and bright students in the classroom. I enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm of the students and teachers throughout the school, as you can see by their smiling faces. Thank you to Thomas Jefferson Elementary School for having me.

I would like to announce another exciting initiative at Washington Lake Park that our Green Committee is sponsoring: The Washington Township Community Garden. This is a wonderful way to plant and grow your own garden if you do not have your own land to do so.

We had a very passionate group of gardeners last year, and look forward to seeing them again, along with additional new gardeners. The work the gardeners put into the land is exciting, especially once we start seeing the flowers blossoming and crops growing. This is also a great chance to interact and engage with other community residents, and I am very proud that we have the opportunity to provide this space for residents. See our website at www.townshipnj.com/544/Community-Garden for an application to get involved.

In an effort to reach and communicate with more of our residents, I am happy to announce the launch of Washington Township’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts! It is my goal for our residents to feel involved in the happenings of their town. This is an ideal way to ensure that new ventures are being announced and shared with the residents.

We have a website and Facebook page, but we thought Instagram and Twitter would be great additions to our social media platforms, as some people are more visual, and others want concise news briefings. We are also always open to suggestions for posts and highlights.

Please follow all of our social media accounts so you may also become more involved:
