Burlington County Library System set to celebrate Black History Month with multiple programs

The schedule includes presentations focusing on notable African Americans and more.

The Burlington County Library System has planned a series of special February events in honor of Black History Month, including poetry and book discussions, movies and more.

Throughout the month, a variety of programs for all ages will be available at the Burlington County Library in Westampton and other BCLS branches.

The schedule includes presentations focusing on notable African Americans, an Underground Railroad quilting craft, African American genealogy research instruction and other events.

African American Architects On Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Burlington County Library, Victorian Vanities, Inc. presents a program about influential African American architects and examines their contributions to the American architectural landscape.

African American Genealogy Research Loretta Bonaccorso from Genealogy Your Way shows how to explore a family’s lineage. Events scheduled for Feb. 7, at noon at the Cinnaminson Branch Library, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Bordentown Branch Library and Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Evesham Branch Library.

Join Us for a Special Movie Presentation Movies set to be screened at various BCLS Branches. (Check the BCLS website for details.) Events set for

· Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m. at the Burlington County Library

· Feb. 9, 6 p.m. at Pemberton Branch Library

· Feb. 15, 2 p.m. at Evesham Branch Library

· Feb. 16, 6 p.m. at Pemberton Branch Library

· Feb. 21, 2 p.m. at Bordentown Branch Library

· Feb. 23, 6 p.m. at Pemberton Branch Library

· Feb. 23, 7 p.m. at the Burlington County Library

Underground Railroad Quilting Craft Learn about the messages hidden in quilt patterns that were used to help slaves escape the bonds of captivity. Create two quilt squares out of paper. Registration required. This event is set for Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Bordentown Branch Library.

Remembering Maya Angelou, Poetry and Discussion – Bring in a favorite Maya Angelou poem to share. This is event is set for Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Evesham Branch Library.

Book Discussion – “Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom” by Catherine Clinton. This event is set for Feb. 15, 2 p.m. at the Maple Shade Branch Library.

Explore the African American History Online Database – Basic computer skills and registration required. This is set for Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Pemberton Branch Library and Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Maple Shade Branch Library.

Journal Writing: African American History – This month’s writing prompt will focus on the Underground Railroad. This event is set for Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Maple Shade Branch Library.

William Still: Retrospective on a Local Hero – Pastor Terrell Person, a direct descendant of the Still family, reveals the story of this founding member of the Underground Railroad. Registration required. This event is set for Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Pinelands Branch Library in Medford.

Homeschool Adventures – Take a look at how men and women of the African American community overcame obstacles to have a profound impact as nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals. This event is for ages 7 to 12. Registration required. This event is scheduled for Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Burlington County Library.

History’s Heroes: George Washington Carver For ages 6 and up. Registration requested. This event is scheduled for Feb. 14 at 6:30 pm. at the Burlington County Library.

Story Time: Famous Inventions For ages 3 to 6. Registration required. This event is scheduled for Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evesham Branch Library.
