Evesham Police offer safe driving tips for hazardous winter months

The Evesham Police Department is reminding residents to drive safe.

Driving during the winter months can be hazardous, and to help Marlton residents stay safe, the Evesham Police Department wants to remind residents of some simple tips this winter season.

First and foremost, residents are reminded to maintain their vehicles this winter season by checking the battery, tire tread and windshield wipers. Residents are also advised to keep their windows clear, put no-freeze fluid in the washer reservoir and regularly check antifreeze levels.

Police also recommend that residents have the following items on hand in their vehicles in case of an emergency: flashlights, jumper cables, abrasive material (sand, kitty litter, even floor mats), shovel, snow brush and ice scraper, warning devices (like flares) and blankets. For long trips, police also recommend food and water, any necessary medication and a cell phone.

When leaving the house, police say residents should also carefully plan their route and allow plenty of time to arrive at a destination. Police tell residents to check the weather and leave early if necessary, be familiar with the maps/directions, and to let others know driving routes and estimated arrival time.

Police also say residents should practice cold weather driving and safety by:

– Steering into a skid.

– Knowing what your brakes will do: stomp on anti lock brakes, pump on non-anti lock brakes.

– Knowing that stopping distances are longer on water-covered ice and ice

-Buckle up and use child safety seats properly. Children 12 and under are much safer in the back seat.

-Slow down and increase distances between cars.

-Keep eyes open for pedestrians walking in the road.

– Avoid fatigue — get plenty of rest before the trip, stop at least every three hours, and rotate drivers if possible.
