Although Mt. Laurel already has a club for mothers, The Mt. Laurel Area Women’s Club is open to women of all ages looking to meet new friends.

Club President Kathleen Strykowsky said the club is somewhat a continuation of Mt. Laurel’s former Newcomers and Friends Club, which dissolved several years ago.

Strykowsky said a core group of women from that club continued to meet for dinner once a month since the club disbanded, and recently they decided to formalize their meetings after realizing there weren’t many similar clubs in the area.

“It came to the point that we decided there was no way for women in the area to meet others,” Strykowsky said.

According to Strykowsky, the group typically meets once a month at the Mt. Laurel Library for about two hours. The women will discuss club affairs, as well as enjoy refreshments and socialize.

The meetings also feature a monthly speaker, such as a previous speaker from the Burlington County League of Women Voters and the club’s next speaker from the Mt. Laurel Police Department to discuss women’s safety.

In addition, the members help organize other local activities for the women, such as dinners and shows.

“The club is directed by the interests of the women who are a part of it,” Strykowsky said.

As Strykowsky is quick to note, another big component of the club is finding ways to support local charities, as the women thought it was important to find ways to support the community.

Even though the club only recently began, already members have participated in activities such as the Cozies 4 Chemo Run at Laurel Acres Park, collecting more than 100 pairs of shoes for a fundraiser run by the Animal Welfare Association in Voorhees, and attending a dinner on Nov. 6 at the Delran Fire Company to support local families in need during the holidays.

“A lot of the women in the group have gotten to the point that we don’t have small children, and we just wanted to find a way that we could give back to our community now that we have more time,” Strykowsky said.

Strykowsky said the club has only a $20 annual membership fee, and as a non-profit, any money the club has leftover at the end of the year would goes back to charity.

Those interested in learning more can also attended the club’s next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 15 at the Mt. Laurel Library at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re very open to anyone interested in joining the club,” Strykowsky said.
