High school sports roundup: Cherry Hill East girls’ tennis falls short at states, East girls’ volleyball keeps winning
Cherry Hill East and West field hockey also learned who they will play in the first round of the playoffs next Tuesday.
Cherry Hill East girls tennis’ postseason run ended on Thursday in the NJSIAA Group IV state semifinals. The Cougars fell short in their match against Bergen Tech, losing 3–2. The loss was Cherry Hill East’s first defeat of the season.
The match was very close, with three matches going to a third set, 10-point tiebreaker. Cherry Hill East earned wins at second singles, where Natalia Yanosov defeated Casey Chiang in straight sets 6–2 6–1; and second doubles, as Sanjana Doshi and Mari Kimenker won third 10-point tiebreaker, 10–6, after splitting the first two sets against the Bergen Tech duo of Lauren Yoo and Maansi Srivastava. The Cougars fell short in 10-point tiebreakers at third singles and first doubles.
The Cougars have one regular season match remaining on their schedule. It will take place at home on Tuesday, Oct. 25 against Cherokee High School.
Cherry Hill East girls’ volleyball extends win streak to 13 win against Washington Twp.
The Cherry Hill East girls volleyball continued it excellent play in conference games on Thursday as they defeated Washington Twp., 2–0, in straight sets.
After taking the first set 25–17, the Cougars were challenged by the Minutemaids in the second set. They ended up edging ahead to win the second set, 28–26.
Megan O’Rourke led Cherry Hill East with 19 assists and four aces. Sarah Pintel had 11 kills for the Cougars. Kim Longa led Cherry Hill East with 12 digs.
The Cougars’ final regular season home match is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 24 against crosstown rival Cherry Hill West.
Cherry Hill East and West field hockey to kick off postseason on Oct. 25
The NJSIAA released the brackets for the 2016 field hockey tournaments on Thursday morning.
The Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill West field hockey teams will both kick off their playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Cherry Hill East will host West Windsor-Plainsboro South on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Cherry Hill East football stadium. The Cougars are the №8 seed in the Central Jersey Group IV tournament. The winner of next Tuesday’s game will play №1 seed Toms River North on Oct. 31.
Cherry Hill West will hit the road on Oct. 25 as they will travel to Central Regional High School in Bayville. The game will begin at 2 p.m. The Lions are the №12 seed in the Central Jersey Group III tournament. The winner of Tuesday’s match will visit Jackson Liberty High School on Saturday, Oct. 29.
