First held in September 2015, this book discussion group was created by Holly Myers who found inspiration from author, Piero Ferrucci.
On the first Tuesday of each month, the Moorestown Library hosts a book discussion analyzing the simple but profound concept of kindness through the chapters of the book “The Power of Kindness, the Unexpected Benefits of Living a Compassionate Life” by Piero Ferrucci. During October, the chapter of the book that was explored was patience, and the monthly discussion took place on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the library.
First held in September 2015, this book discussion group was created by Holly Myers who found inspiration from the psychologist, Ferrucci. She strongly believes the topic of kindness is both powerful and empowering, as are the 18 specific qualities of kindness Ferrucci distinguishes within his book.
“As a mental health professional myself, committed to the support of emotional well-being, I bear witness to the impact of emotional abuse in its varying forms,” Myers said. “Awareness that we have a choice, and can be kind and honest in our interactions, is something I seek to expand.”
Designed for interested adults, local community members are encouraged to come to these events and to take part in the opportunity for reflection, connection, inspiration and fun. Myers believes that as a result of attending these discussions, the community can gain increased consciousness, communication and a sense of community.
“Learning to step back and choose instead of react to the circumstances of our lives is an important part of patience,” Myers said. “Each topic has been matched up to a month with a natural fit. For children, this month’s focus on patience relates to them patiently waiting for Halloween. For the rest of us, it could mean anything.”
Continuing with the theme of kindness, the group, comprised of roughly six members, has participated in the Moorestown Fourth of July parade wearing their kindness t-shirts, have joined to play kindness twister and to work on kindness crossword puzzles and have conducted other related activities.
“My favorite part of the book discussion is meeting new people and sharing,” Myers said. “The mother of one of our participants became so inspired that she started her own book group in Glenside, Pa. Another participant expressed that she chose Moorestown as her new residence because of the presence of our commitment to kindness — seen on display at the township office.”
The next book discussions will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will highlight the quality of trust. Community members with questions about this book discussion group can reach out to Myers directly at (609) 876–2730.
