In observance of Martin Luther King Day of Service, Resurrection Catholic School students in preschool through eighth grade were asked to bring certain items to be included in a Blessing Bag for Cathedral Kitchen. Blessing Bags are gallon sized Ziploc bags filled with supplies that would be useful to a homeless person. =
Volunteers carry these bags in their car, and when they see a homeless person, they give them the bag along with a blessing. To make the service project more meaningful, students were encouraged to earn and use their own money to purchase the assigned items.
The finished bags each contained a box of band-aids, an individual tissue pack, chapstick, wet ones, a comb, a pair of socks, a water bottle, a prepackaged snack, a travel size shampoo, deodorant, hand lotion, bar of soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and a card from the students who prepared the bag.
The goal was to fill 100 bags, but thanks to the generosity of the students, they filled 129 bags and had extra supplies to donate to Cathedral Kitchen.
